The Ultimate Texas RV Resort Road Trip

If it were up to us, we’d take the following route to make the ultimate Texas RV resort road trip.

First, we’d start at The Vineyards Campground and Cabins just outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and lazily spend our days kayaking, fishing on Grapevine Lake and exploring the nature trails. There are plenty of activities and sites to see in the area ranging from Dallas World Aquarium, tour AT&T Stadium, visit the Fort Worth Stock Yards, see the street art at Deep Ellum and the 6th Floor Museum.

From there, it is 198 miles to Sam Houston National Forest. This would be a change of pace from the city-life of Dallas which suits us just fine. Surround yourself in the peace and quiet of nature is just what the doctor would order.

After recharging for a while, we’d be ready to get “weird” in Austin so we’d head 165 miles over to Austin Lone Star RV Park. We’d be sure to try as many barbecue restaurants as possible which Austin has to offer such as Franklin’s, Loro, LeRoy and Lewis, or La Barbecue. A swim at Hamilton Pool Reserve or Barton Springs Pool would be a great way to beat the Texas heat. If music is your thing, the live music on “Dirty Sixth” Street might be right up your alley.

After Austin, we’d drive 89 miles to the Alamo River RV Resort and Campground in Ormy. Their tagline is “city close, country quiet” and we believe it. There are plenty of museums and activities for every interest (see above) but if you wanted to lay low, there are bike trails, kayaking and fishing which sounds a lot better than a day at the office if you ask us. We think the Natural Bridge Caverns and Brackenridge Park might be worth visiting while in the San Antonio area. The last leg of this RV road trip would be 173 miles to Mustang Island State Park in Corpus Christi for some sun, sand, and surf.

A total of 624 miles would take you from just north of the Dallas area down to the Gulf of Mexico. Once your down with the Gulf, you could optionally head back towards Sam Houston National Forest by way of Houston. If that isn’t enough adventure for you, you could leave Mustang Island State Park and drive another 167 miles to the border of Mexico afterwards. We’ve outlined the requirements for driving an RV into Mexico for you, should you decide to head south of the border.
